Coffee.
What’s your preference? Black? Milk? Cream? Sugar? Stevia?
Locally-roasted whole beans? Mass-produced pre-ground?
Plain drip? Espresso? French press? Something else?
Personally, I drink black coffee, maybe with a bit of milk or cream, but I never add sugar. Plain ol’ drip coffee is fine for me, but during the summer I do make my old cold brew which I absolutely love because it has a huge caffeine punch but with no acidity. Only rule I follow at home is to buy whole bean and grind my coffee as I need it rather than buying pre-ground.
I’m drinking a medium roast made by Kicking Horse, a Canadian company that’s readily available in grocery stores and Amazon. I’ve tried a bunch of their coffees and haven’t been disappointed.
Then again, I’m the kind of guy who’s not overly picky about coffee - if it’s around, I’ll probably drink it, but the one place I don’t voluntarily spend my money on is Tim Hortons. However, if someone at work buys me Tims then I’ll drink it, no complaints.
If I have to buy coffee, it’ll be McDs or Starbucks (which people love to shit on but I think is fine when you stay away from their high-sugar dessert coffees and stick with their plain brews) but it’s easier and cheaper just to brew at home and take it with you in a thermos. Local, fancy coffee shops are nice but when I go to those I drink fancier coffees, my preference being the flat white whic
h sounds awfully boring but turns out to be pretty damn delicious.
Coffee is one of those things that’s just full of gatekeeping enthusiasts but at the end of the day imma drink it whatever fucking way I want to drink it.

Kicking horse is pretty good, and they have awesome coffee names like “Kick Ass”.

espresso, black. Preferably with anisette or anisette sugar...

I use a local roaster called Wandering Goat, specifically their Hair of the Goat beans. The weekends I french press then add raw sugar and half and half. I make cold brew for the work week, half cold brew and half boiling water. I will usually drink that black.

Similar. Usually a dark roast. Black (there are a few shops I go to that have super bitter coffee so I’ll add a splash of creamer) . I use a French press at home and grind whole beans but nothing fancy. I have been getting a medium dark sumatran mandheling from private selection lately. I’m super cheap and not picky

Yeah, and another oppo (CarsFortLangley) posted last night about another variety they make called “454 Horsepower” which, along with “Kick Ass”, were the first two I bought from them.
Currently drinking a variety called “Z-Wrangler” which I’ve never found in store but was on sale on Amazon for $9.99/lb. Just finished a bag from them called “Hola” which was a light roast that was very easy to drink.
Overall, they make very nice coffees .

I’m not a big fan of anise but it’s very contextual; that black licorice kind of flavour is not my thing at all but I’ve had plenty of foods that use fennel or (star) anise for aroma/flavouring and loved them.
I am a big fan of using Baileys in coffee but I save that for vacations since I’ll be free of any responsibilities, which allows me to start drinking liquors first thing in the morning. I normally don’t like overly sweet/milky/flavoured coffees but Baileys (or something similar) is an exception.

Black, and strong. I really prefer dark roasts - we typically drink Starbucks Verona at home, which is more my wife’s preference then mine, but I’m good with it.

I haven’t tried that mixed approach yet - cold brew needs to be watered down a bit anyway, so that would be a good way of having hot coffee without any acidity (which I don’t always like).

I have this mug at work, sums it up pretty well:
At home I drink tea.

True, sometimes a particular coffee is just too strong but milk/cream really helps to balance it out. I try to avoid those coffees but when you like trying new brands/varieties like I do it’s inevitable that you run into some that you may not enjoy as much.

I buy whatever organic whole beans Trader Joes has. Grind ‘em and stick ‘em in a French press. Black.
This morning I just reheated the leftover coffee from yeaterday. During spring/summer/fall I’ll make cold brew in the press.

I’m not a huge fan of K-cups - the machines at my workplace tend to give me watered down coffee (but that could be due to the amount of water I use, which is typically 10 oz. I believe, possibly 8 oz.) and I don’t like the waste they produce.
That said, these machines have their place and I’ve definitely found some tasty varieties. If I don’t have my own coffee then I’ll definitely resort to K-cups at work, so I’m no fucking saint, either.

Starbucks coffees in general are quite strong in terms of their roasts - even their medium roasts, for me, are borderline dark/bold roasts.
I like the Starbucks blonde roasts which I find equivalent to most medium roasts - I don’t know if it’s necessarily available everywhere but in Canada they have one called “True North” or some other Canadian bullshit but tastes pretty damn good.
While I don’t buy coffee from Starbucks very often, I do like a lot of the whole bean coffee that you can buy and just make at home.

I have found you do need to run it on the large cup to really get a full brew flavor. But I am noticing those little wasted cups add up.
Granted 2018 was a year I got the Keurig, a 7.3 turbo diesel and chopped down a massive pine tree. Sorry Mother Nature, maybe I’ll try and plant some trees this year? ¯\_()_/¯

My work mug:
FYI, I drive a Kia Forte5 SX.
I tend to drink tea at home after work, I love green teas personally (love me a good genmaicha) but right now I’m working through the last of a couple of black teas that I have, an Earl Grey and a Lapsang Souchong (a very smoky Chinese black tea).

We don’t have Trader Joe’s around here (I don’t think they’re in Canada at all, but definitely not here) but from what I’ve heard about them I’d imagine it’s quality stuff anyway.
Cold brew is the shit. First time I made it I forgot to dilute with water, god damn that stuff can give you massive caffeine jitters.
![]() 01/06/2019 at 11:35 |

I’m hooked on this stuff.

Heh, like I said I’m no saint, either. Driving is where I’m most wasteful; despite having a small 1.6 turbo I’m still only getting, on average, 12L/100km (about 20 mpg) when I know I can get much less if I accelerated more gently. Then again, my driving is almost 100% city driving, whereas with pure highway driving I can get around 8L/100km (around 30 mpg) or better.
![]() 01/06/2019 at 11:37 |

That’s big talk. I’m guessing it’s a lighter roast so that less of the caffeine is burnt off?
It’d be interesting to cold brew this stuff and feel the jitters.
![]() 01/06/2019 at 11:42 |

Yeah, we never go to Starbucks- we just drip brew at home.
I’ve kind of gotten hooked on their darker roasts - so for me, most of the “ dark” roasts from other places don’t measure up.
However, I do really like McDonald’s coffee, and Burger King is decent, too.

Poor man’s a mericano (espresso with hot water added) . It’s an easy way to a have a terrific cup of coffee, if you like cold brew’s flavor, in the mornings. I know some people that don’t think it tastes strong enough even non-diluted.

My preference is whole bean, ground at home medium roasts from the local roaster (and best coffee shop in town) that’s just down the road from my house. Occasionally I drink coffee black, but generally I add cream.
![]() 01/06/2019 at 12:05 |

Drinking it right now. Just cream! Or Irish cream...
![]() 01/06/2019 at 12:14 |

During the summer I almost only drink cold brew. The taste seems less strong because it hits you differently without the heat/acidity. It’s easy to drink too much, first time I made cold brew I drank as much as I would with regular drip coffee but even before I got halfway through my thermos (which holds 1 litre) I was getting the jitters. I found out afterwards that you’re supposed to dilute this stuff.
![]() 01/06/2019 at 12:16 |
|
Yeah if milk/cream is around I’ll add it, I mostly drink black coffee out of practicality since I don’t keep milk/cream around since I use so little that it always goes bad before I can finish it. My cheapness prevents me from paying more per litre by buying smaller cartons of milk instead of buying the 4L bags (yeah, it’s a Canadian thing, look it up).

Black as my soul. Whatever I have on hand. (This ranges from Folgers to Red Cedar Fair Trade Organic blah blah it’s just rebranded Caruso’s . Crappy K-cup-analog to legit Aeropress.)
If you stopped pouring, you’re doing it wrong.
No, seriously. I drink about 60 ounces of coffee. Per day .

I wish I had some Baileys but I need to do some work today and I’m taking a self-imposed break from alcohol (not a new year’s thing, but the fact that I was drinking heavily for about a week straight during my Christmas break). Already more than a week in, it’s nice waking up with no alcohol after-effects but god damn some evenings I just want to have a couple of beers. It’s scary how drinking in the evening slowly became a habit for me.

Damn, that’s a lot of coffee. I myself go through about one litre (around 32 oz, I think?) on a work day, maybe half that amount on weekends if I have any coffee at all.

I know!
The next best thing for me is watching racing while drinking, but F1/MotoGP tends to be in the morning so that doesn’t work properly, either. I think I need to start watching IndyCar.

This isn’t even my peak coffee intake. I had to reduce my coffee intake massively about 20 years ago when I developed a severe ulcer from stress and too much coffee.
You know those HUGE Bunn Axiom brewers that brew a gallon at a time?
One of the carafes literally had my name on it. I would run 2-3 brews a day, just for me.

The same as every day. Regular drip coffee from local company. P re ground Paulig Tanzania blend (medium roast) or Gold Label (light roast) with moderate amount of low fat milk (keep that non-fat milk away from me!)

It was one of those surprise Amazon finds where I told myself, “How could I afford not to get this?” It was $5 here , so in USD it’s basically free.

Invermere was an hour away from home growing up, so Kicking Horse is my ‘local’ coffee.. I worked through their catalog and have been to their shop. It’s a good company and family to support. Around here it’s in all the grocery shops and is probably my standard. Three Sisters is probably my favourite- maybe Hola for weekends.
Here in Kamloops I still get Shuswap Coffe Co. roasted ofer in Salmon Arm. There are a few local in town roasters. Twisted Goat is my next bag-
I f rench press at my desk, but aeropress at home. At work I drink black, but I drink it slow enough for the grit to settle. At home with the aeropress I use our frothier and make lattes. Fancy, but I only have one or two if it’s a easy day.
Cheers!

Is non-fat milk just white water?
Dairy is one of those things that’s waaaaaaay better with more fat - I’ve actually moved from the regular 2% milk you find around here to the “homogenized” 3%, and my local grocer (kind of like a Trader Joes but it’s a small southern Ontario chain) started selling “organic” milk that’s at 3.8% fat which I still want to try.

I wonder if there’s some link between goats and coffee; there is a local roaster around here called Happy Goat coffee which makes good stuff, too.

4L bags of milk sounds brilliant. I’d try that if it were an option.
![]() 01/06/2019 at 13:09 |

To clarify: it’s 4L total, but they come in 3 smaller bags. You also need a little plastic receptacle which holds the milk bag so that you can pour it in your coffee/cereal/etc.

3 smaller bags does sound easier to deal with.

I generally prefer a dark roast as well. I used to grind my own, but need to get a new grinder. Having too many kitchen gadgets already has that on hold till we move to a place that hopefully has a bigger kitchen.
Part of the reason for the lack of space is all my coffee brewing gadgets. How I make it depends on how much I plan to drink that day.
I have a pour over maker, a French press, a stovetop espresso maker, and a cold brewer. The stovetop espresso makes my favorite coffee but only makes one mug worth at a time. I tried a larger model my sister in law has in hopes the coffee would be as good and give me more to drink but didn’t feel the results were as good.
I typically do black but occasionally will do creamer; like you I don’t do sugar.

There’s a definite taste difference. Around here 3% is the norm for low fat. Stores also sell “full milk” with natural fat percentage up to 4,4%.
I tend to drink a lot of milk outside coffee too. A glass with every meal outside breakfast.

I’ve only tasted coconut water once and didn’t enjoy it; strange since I normally enjoy coconut, like coconut milk for curries or toasted coconut on sweets.

Coconut water is pretty hit-or-m iss. Some brands cut it with water, or add sugar, or leave pulp in it, etc. This stuff tastes more like a coffee drink than a coconut one though.

Right now I’ve been enjoying the Black Rifle Coffee Company Holiday Blend, 1.5 TBSp Kerrygold Unsalted butter, 2 TBSp MCT oil and 1 packet of In The Raw stevia sweetener, blended. I know butter coffee/bulletproof coffee seems like a fad to some but its definitely been working better for me than cream/sugar.

At home I drink it hot, almost always black. I use my French press, get my whole beans from a local roaster, medium roast. If I’m out i usually have cream and sugar. Or I'll get something fancier like a latte or cappuccino, or iced coffee which is my fav. Most times I'm too lazy to make it at home, seeing as I only drink a cup a day.
